While I enjoyed aspects of ownership, I can now let my NVA team handle the details of running a very busy hospital while I dedicate my time to working up cases and learning to be a better veterinarian.

Management Team

Stanley R. Creighton, DVM, ACVIM

Dr. Creighton is the Founder of NVA and was CEO from 1996 until 2009. Prior to that, he was a practicing clinician for twenty-four years in hospitals providing general, specialized and emergency care. He was a practice owner for nineteen years. Dr. Creighton is a graduate of the University of California, Davis, and a board certified Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Dr. Creighton has lectured throughout the United States and Canada and authored numerous journal articles and textbook chapters.

Gregory Hartmann

President and Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Hartmann joined NVA in April 2008 and currently serves as President and Chief Executive Officer. Prior to joining NVA, Mr. Hartmann served in a variety of operating roles for DaVita Inc., a national provider of renal dialysis services, since 1998. Mr. Hartmann earned his MBA from Harvard Business School and his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Vermont.

Scott Shulman

Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Shulman joined NVA in February 1998 as its Controller and he currently serves as Chief Financial Officer. Prior to joining NVA, Mr. Shulman held roles of increasing responsibility with Fortune 500 companies including Director of Finance at Viacom and Manager of Accounting and Finance at The Walt Disney Company. He spent five years in public accounting and received his CPA designation while employed at Grant Thornton LLP. Mr. Shulman earned an MBA from the Marshall Business School at USC and a BA in Economics from UC Los Angeles.

Steve Ager

Chief Development Officer
Mr. Ager joined NVA in January 2011 and currently serves as Chief Development Officer. Prior to joining NVA, Mr. Ager served as Vice President of Business Development for Kindred Healthcare, Inc., a national provider of long-term patient care services, since 2005.  Prior to serving as Vice President, Mr. Ager worked in healthcare investment banking at Morgan Stanley, Inc. and Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin, Inc. from 2000 to 2005.  Mr. Ager earned his JD/MBA from Duke University and his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from UC San Diego.

Brian Kelly

Chief Operating Officer
Mr. Kelly joined NVA in May 2013. He was previously a co-founder and VP of Operations for Cobalt Health, a revenue cycle management company serving healthcare providers nationwide. Prior to Cobalt Health, Mr. Kelly worked as a management consultant for the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Before BCG, Mr. Kelly was at GE Healthcare, with roles in finance, sourcing, production line management, and manufacturing engineering.  Mr. Kelly holds an MBA in finance from the Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania, and a BS in electrical engineering from the University of Notre Dame.

Turpin Mott

Chief Community Officer
Mr. Mott officially joined NVA in July 2015 after having worked as a consultant with the company for the previous eight years in a variety of organizational development roles. Turpin has extensive experience in facilitating and guiding leaders and teams to increase efficiency, capacity and collaboration. He helps create solid foundations for individuals and teams based on accountability, integrity, authenticity and responsibility which directly impacts the success of the organization. Prior to his work with NVA, Turpin recruited and developed teams for nationwide wireless communication corporations, including facilitating the Sprint/Nextel team merger in the Pacific Northwest and launching the initial AT&T wireless development across the southeast United States. Mr. Mott is also a Combat Action Veteran, having served with the United States Marine Corps in Desert Shield and Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. He attended Louisiana State University.

Eric Smith

General Counsel

Mr. Smith joined NVA in February 2015 as its General Counsel. Prior to joining NVA, Mr. Smith was a partner at the international law firm Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP, where he was in the corporate department, with a focus on servicing private equity clients, including many in the veterinary industry. While at Katten Muchin Rosenman, Mr. Smith represented NVA as outside counsel since 2003. Mr. Smith earned his JD/ MBA from the University of Illinois as well as a BS in Finance from the University of Illinois.

Business Development

Nick Burda

Vice President of Business Development
Mr. Burda joined NVA in June 2010 and serves as Vice President of Business Development, covering the eastern United States. Prior to NVA, Mr. Burda spent most of his career in senior business development roles within human healthcare. He has worked for such notable healthcare companies as Physiotherapy Associates (once a division of the Stryker Corporation), U.S. Physical Therapy, Tenet Healthcare and Summerville Healthcare Group, a start-up assisted living company. Mr. Burda earned his MBA from The George Washington University and his BS in Finance from The American University.

Chris Suscha

Vice President, Business Development
Mr. Suscha joined NVA in August 2016 and serves as Vice President, Business Development. Prior to joining NVA, he was Vice President, Development with United Surgical Partners. Prior to serving as Vice President, Chris was in the healthcare investment banking division for Houlihan, Lokey Howard & Zukin and Deloitte & Touche, both in Chicago. Chris has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Management from Beloit College and earned a Masters of Business Administration degree from the Jack C. Massey Graduate School of Business at Belmont University.

Steve Sheehy, DVM

Director of Business Development
Dr. Sheehy joined NVA in 1997 as an Associate Veterinarian at West Valley Veterinary Clinic and in 2000; he became the Hospital Director at Central Valley Veterinary Hospital in Salt Lake City. In 2006, Dr. Sheehy joined the NVA Management Team as its Western Division Director of Operations and in 2013 became the Transition Support Director before taking on the role as Director of Business Development. Prior to working with NVA, Dr. Sheehy practiced veterinary medicine in California and worked as a regulatory veterinary for the US Department of Agriculture in New Mexico. He received his DVM from Colorado State University and his MBA from the University of Utah.

Kathryn Stieh, DVM, MS

Transition Director – Business Development

 Dr. Stieh joined NVA as the Manager of Division Operations in 2009. Dr. Stieh served as medical director of two hospitals in South Florida. She has conducted research and study programs in the UK and Australia and she also holds a Master’s Degree in Nutrition Biochemistry and her DVM from Auburn University.

Tyler Stroupe

Director of Revenue and Business Intelligence

Mr. Stroupe joined NVA in August 2007 and currently serves as its Director of Revenue and Business Intelligence. Prior to joining NVA, he served in a variety of roles in the Commercial Lending Group at Bank of the West from 2004 to 2007. Mr. Stroupe earned his BA in Economics from UCLA.

Erik Philipp

Director of Business Operations

Mr. Philipp joined NVA in October 2015 and was previously a Case Team Leader at Bain & Company, a global management consulting firm, where he worked with clients in the healthcare, entertainment, utilities, and electronics industries. Prior to Bain & Co., Mr. Philipp served in multiple roles as a Captain in the US Air Force, including the Director of Operations for a rapid reaction force, which delivered engineering support during combat operations and humanitarian aid missions in various parts of the world. He holds an MBA in Management, Finance, and Business Economics from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, an MSE in Environmental Engineering, and a BS in Civil Engineering, both from Johns Hopkins University.

Yang Shi

Director of Business Operations

Mr. Shi joined NVA in April 2016 and currently serves as Director of Business Operations. Prior to joining NVA, Mr. Shi worked in the management consulting industry at McKinsey & Company, with strategy, technology, and operational experience across a variety of industries. He has also worked in product management and system architect roles at DIRECTV, and circuit design roles at SanDisk. Mr. Shi earned his MBA at INSEAD France, and his MS and BS electrical engineering degrees at Stanford University.

Adam Zilberman, MCSE

Director of Information Technology

Mr. Zilberman joined NVA in July 2005 and is currently its Director of Information Technology. Prior to NVA he spent fifteen years managing professional services, network design, installation and engineering for a variety of information technology companies. He is a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, a Cisco Certified Networking Administrator and a Citrix Certified Engineer.

Elizabeth Garant

Director of Organization Development

Ms. Garant joined NVA in March 2005 and currently serves as Director of Organization Development. Prior to joining NVA, she held progressively responsible positions with Accenture, a global management consulting firm, as well as various hotel management positions with the Walt Disney Company. Ms. Garant received an International MBA from the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver and a BA from the University of Michigan.
